Ingredients (240 ml cup used)

  • ¼ cup toor dal / kandi pappu
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • 3 red chilies or green chilies (slit)
  • 2 small garlic cloves
  • Small piece of tamarind
  • salt to taste

seasoning

  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 garlic clove crushed
  • 1 broken red chili or green chili
  • ¼ tsp cumin
  • ¼ tsp mustard
  • 1 tbsp. Oil

How to make the recipe

  1. Wash dal and fry it in 1 tsp of oil till you get a nice aroma. This is optional and you can use it without washing too.
  2. Fry red chilies or green chilies on a low flame till they turn crispy, add cumin to the same pan.
  3. Grind all the ingredients with little water to a smooth paste. Adjust the consistency as desired. We like it smooth, coarse chutney tastes good with rice.
  4. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan, add cumin and mustard. When they begin to crackle, add curry leaves and garlic, fry til curry leaves turn crisp. Pour this to the chutney and mix well.
